W2 50 SHADES

of lamp...

Lamp, or light, is an everyday thing that in our life
"Lamp" has various names: light, light sources, floor lamp, sun, stars...

For me, lamp is a must-have in daily life, besides regular shape, what else can a lamp look like?

In this project, I decided to explore shapes of lamp with different methods.

The first method I decided to explore is by using pen+paper to sketch anything that comes to my mind. In the meantime, I noted down some keywords.

It's always good to start with random sketches to note down everything that comes out in my mind.

Not every idea is good, some are even bad.

However, some are good; then I continue go deep with different methods

1st method - pen & paper

The second method I decided to explore is by playing with different geometrical shapes to emphasize the abstract feeling of the lamp

The lamp can be fun! Basic geometric shapes can give creative life to a light.

I've been thinking, what if a lamp can be organic? Can it be absolute 0 waste?

The third method I decide to explore with is Blender. I create some imaginary "lamp"

Lastly, I choose to explore some curvy shapes with physical modeling by using recycled materials.

I enjoyed the process of working on the 50 shades project. Looking back after completing the project, I found the 2nd stage protos are more refined. Even though I came from a background in fashion design, sketches are a nightmare for me because I don’t sketch well. I was afraid of sketches. From this project, and also from the readings this week, I realized that sketching shouldn’t be afraid, it’s a “must have” process in design development. I did get a couple of bad sketches, but some are good. And some of my 2nd stage ideas come from sketches. It also helped me think.

When I first got this project, I barely have any ideas. By pushing myself to explore with different methods, I noticed that ideas bump out rather than sitting there and daydreaming. Working with various methods is not only fun but also a great practice because sketches, 3d modeling, and physical modeling are the area I have less experience with. However, they're more methods waiting for me to explore.
